The Port Marine Safety Code The Port Marine Safety Code was developed by the Department for Transport in consultation with representatives with an interest in port related matters. It was published in March 2000. In July 2003, the MCA became responsible for maintaining and updating of the Code and associated documents. The MCA co-ordinates the development of national occupational standards for a range of port related jobs such as marine pilots, harbour masters and vessel traffic services (VTS) operators.

Consents for Developments in Coastal Waters Activities which involve construction works in coastal waters or installing structures on the seabed require formal consent under various regulations. The MCA is asked to comment on navigational safety aspects of applications for consent. The MCA has been heavily involved in providing guidance for developers in order to ensure that all navigational safety aspects are addressed in the design and construction of offshore renewable energy installations - in particular, offshore wind farms.
